S. ist ein wichtiger Bestandteil von [[Schwarzpulver]] und ähnlichen [[Brandsatz|Brandsätzen]]. S. kommt in mehreren Modifikationen vor; bei Raumtemperatur ist der sog. alpha-Schwefel thermodynamisch am stabilsten, der die typische gelbe Schwefelfarbe hat.<br />
Verarbeitet wird S. in der Regel als feines Pulver.<br />
<br />
Zusammen mit [[Chlorat|Chloraten]] darf Schwefel wegen möglicher saurer Reaktionen (Entzündungs- und Explosionsgefahr) nicht verwendet werden. Schwefelblüte (das natürlich vorkommende Schwefelmineral) wird wegen des meist hohen Säuregehaltes nicht eingesetzt.<br />
